F&T Students Explore Inspiring Possibilities at Penn Med Experience with BioQuest

Updated: Mar 17

On Saturday, March 7, 6 of our F&T students participated in the Penn Med Experience, where they engaged in hands-on college activities at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. From the moment students arrived on campus, curiosity and excitement filled the air. The visit provided a holistic look into medical education, allowing students to engage directly with the tools, technology, and people shaping the future of healthcare.

Throughout the day, students explored medicine beyond the classroom through immersive activities designed to mirror real medical training. Highlights included:

  • Hands-on ultrasound demonstrations, where students learned how imaging technology helps doctors diagnose and care for patients.

  • Surgery simulations that showed students elements of precision and problem-solving skills.

  • Guided lab and campus tours, offering insight into daily life as a medical student.

Beyond the activities themselves, the Penn Med Experience sparked meaningful reflection about future career paths. For many students, these experiences transformed dreams about medicine into something achievable. Student surveys revealed that the visit reshaped how many participants viewed medicine and STEM careers. Several students described the day as “eye-opening,” helping them see medicine not only as challenging but also engaging and rewarding. One student explained, “Yes, it really did! I always thought about how it’s only difficult, but it seems interesting, and even fun.” Another student shared that the experience broadened their understanding of STEM fields: “It reminded me STEM fields aren’t all math. Now I see how fun and interesting it could be.” The impact was immediate and decisive. Students reported newfound goals, including pursuing neuroscience, exploring medical-related majors, and even aspiring to attend the University of Pennsylvania in the future.

Through this experience, students were able to gain exposure to pathways in medicine and science that may have once felt distant. The collaboration emphasized access and experiential learning, ultimately empowering these students to envision themselves in professional and academic spaces!
