P.S. 59 came together for a meaningful Feed Our Needs event in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, bringing students, families, and staff together to reflect, learn, and serve their community!
Families were welcomed with a warm cup of hot chocolate before being directed to the auditorium. The afternoon began with a viewing of a video highlighting Dr. King’s dream, which set the tone for a thoughtful group discussion. Parents, guardians, and students engaged in conversations about Dr. King’s legacy, his commitment to justice, and how his message continues to inspire action today. Students then took the lead, proudly presenting their research papers to their families and sharing what they had learned about Dr. King’s life and impact.

Following the presentations, families were invited for a hot food giveaway and access to warm clothing. This was a way to focus on meeting community needs. In addition to reflection and learning, students participated in hands-on community service. As part of the day’s activities, students learned about the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) by serving together through acts of kindness and care for their neighbors. Students donated books in support of a literacy service project, sorted them for distribution, packed accessible product kits, and worked together to make chili for community members in need. They also created artwork and wrote uplifting cards to uplift individuals and families experiencing hardship.

The MLK Feed Our Needs event was a powerful way to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Through service, learning, and collaboration, P.S. 59 students and families demonstrated that even small acts of kindness can make a meaningful difference!
