Arete Student Interns and Employees Learn Real World Skills

This year students across Arete's two high school campuses are engaging in real world skills through their internships with Arete.

Student employees at Media High School are engaged in a professionalism seminar where they practice and grow their emotional intelligence, expand their lesson planning skills, and reflect on their own professional strengths, goals, and growth areas. Our self-care club for students at Media High School is growing a culture of wellness among future professionals.

At The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, high school interns are working with Citizens Bank branch managers to open bank accounts and deepen their personal financial literacy skills. In our pilot ISP Internship, our Communications Interns are mentoring 8th graders to build social media campaigns to raise awareness about common diseases that disproportionally impact patients in the Bronx, conducting interviews with BioQuest STEM mentors, and publishing to Arete's social media channels.

Partner Feature: RTW Charitable Foundation

During the height of the pandemic, RTW Charitable Foundation reached out to Arete Education through President of Community Engagement Marti Speranza Wong. It was a call out of the blue offering help to students and families in the South Bronx. “What do you really need?” Marti asked. “We want to get money to grassroots organizations immediately to help families who are suffering.” After that initial call with RTW, the funding came weeks later to launch the Arete Hope Network. The program provided wraparound support for 30 families living in temporary housing during the pandemic who were facing significant barriers to accessing school. As a result all students participating in the program passed all their core classes and successfully completed the school year in good standing.

Fast forward three and a half years, and RTW Charitable Foundation is still investing in grassroots education organizations in the South Bronx through an innovative RTW BioQuest program and other innovative programs to put teens into project-based learning contexts that inspire their work as future scientists, investors, and entrepreneurs. Our students in grades 7-10 have been working alongside mentors at RTW as part of the BioQuest and Week Without Walls Programs facilitated through Arete.

RTW’s BioQuest STEM mentoring program is in its first year. Through the pilot over 50 students across Arete the Hunts Point Alliance for Children have engaged with 20 RTW mentors to learn about diverse careers in biotech. They engage in team challenges, explore career pathways into science, and visit professional settings across the city. Students have toured RTW Investments, learning how a company sets out to invest in biomedical breakthrough technologies, as well as JLABS and Weill Cornell BioVenture eLabs learning about applied careers in STEM. Through RTW’s BioQuest, students have also done scientific investigations on the BioBus and spent the day in New Jersey at the Liberty Science Center. BioQuest mentors led hands-on lab activities including extracting DNA from strawberries, team pipette racing, and a video demonstration of robotics technology used in the lab. Students got to explore the space, engage with their mentors, and meet the Head of JLABS US Northeast. This markable group of professionals across the city has invested so much in our students this year. We are so appreciative to be able to facilitate this amazing partnership into a second school year.

Arete Charity Golf Tournament

This year, Arete Education (Arete) will be hosting an inaugural Golf Tournament to raise funds to support initiatives that enable us to serve our extraordinary young people from underserved communities in the Bronx, Harlem, and Brooklyn in New York. Through this tournament we hope to provide access and create open spaces for our young people.

The mission of Arete Education is to train and empower youth to lead successful lives, regardless of their home zip code. Each year we partner with local schools and community groups to get our students into colleges, gain employment, and develop healthy mindsets. Arete creates pathways for Black and Brown students to defy the odds, overcoming obstacles no child in the U.S. should endure. Our school partner, The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, boasts a 100% high school graduation rate and sends students each year to Cornell, Boston University, and NYU among other selective colleges despite the reality that 95% of students live in poverty.

The Arete Golf Tournament, which opens doors to professionals and youth alike, will be played at Saint Andrews Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY, on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, 10 am - 4pm. Saint Andrews is America’s oldest golf club and is a noted course for golf enthusiasts. We will start with a light brunch, followed by a shotgun start, and conclude with a cocktail reception and dinner where we will give out awards for the day’s best performances.

Arete Education Golf Tournament Opens Doors for South Bronx & Harlem Teens

October 24th Event Raises Money, Awareness for Youth in Underserved Communities

New York City, NY: Today Arete Education, Inc., a South Bronx-based nonprofit youth development organization, announced plans to host its inaugural Golf Tournament at Saint Andrews Golf Club in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY. Saint Andrews is America’s oldest private golf club and is a noted course for golf enthusiasts. The club will open its doors to Arete’s diverse group of tournament participants which includes leaders in the fields of law, health, human services, and business as well as program alumni currently enrolled in college. The golf tournament will be held on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 beginning at 10 am.

Arete’s students, staff, and Board directors all represent diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, many hailing from low-income backgrounds and never dreaming of being invited to a private golf club. Arete Board Director Kelly Holloway is Managing Director at Siebert Williams Shank and long-time member of Saint Andrews Golf Club. He was eager to connect Arete’s students and Board Directors to networking and recreational benefits of Golf in the form of a new fundraiser for the nonprofit that seeks to build private-public partnerships to invest in the city’s youth. The event is currently seeking sponsors and players who are passionate about investing in the city’s youth and see the value of building diverse professional networks and relationships through golf.

McEvans Francois, Arete’s Board President, is thrilled about the event. He shares, “This is really exciting to bring our Black and Brown youth together with professionals on the Board as well as professionals in our BERG networks, and to do it on such a stunningly beautiful historic Golf Course. It’s amazing for us.” Francois, Executive Director at a global Data and FinTech firm, is active in bringing professionals together through Black Employee Resource Group (BERG) initiatives on Wall Street. Francois sees the Arete Golf Tournament as a perfect opportunity to connect BERG professionals with the mission of Arete and open doors to the next generation of professional leaders.

As the year comes to a close, Arete Education and The Collective Black Employee Resource Group (CFBERG) wanted to thank you for your generosity and support for the Feed Our Needs campaign. We hope to continue this partnership and drive our mission investing in youth across New York City, we need your support to fulfill this mission in our communities.
